Sorry to hear that you had a bad time, but they were not doing it by design and was wasting everyone's time.Īsynchronous Interviewing is actually way better than the "traditional" in-person interview. And when bad examples like this is treated as "the new trend", no one wants to try anything different or new. So this might be a perfect example of when a good method is poorly implemented. In Canada, we ended up making a very weird economy that's extremely service-based, to the point where me and a good set of my friends who also graduated are pretty much just doing food service, our own businesses, and living in the parent's house. Been teaching Chinese kids English too (you don't need to speak their language), and those rich parents are giving me hundreds each day. I'm been actually making YouTube videos and reviews, and have actually been getting hundreds of dollars though it is time-consuming to make and edit. Nothing weird with me, no criminal record, perfect driving record. Degree would've cost maybe $60-70k CAD in total but due to working ended up with about $25k in debt.

I have a 3.9 GPA from Waterloo, 5 co-op positions at four different companies which adds up to about two years of direct engineering experience, and now I'm just doing restaurant work and getting laughed at by people and family. I've got an amazing background in chemical engineering, which has sadly been hit hard from falling oil prices. Though I'm Canadian this may be applicable for other folks too - don't do engineering. Sad thing too is that it's mostly for the intern/co-op and entry-level positions - you ask anybody who's intermediate or senior about these kinds of systems and they will laugh and say they only do person-to-person. But yikes, never have I seen an atrocity like Hirevue. I've paid for my own flight across the country to go to a five minute interview. I've been in an interview and I've had people actually stand up and start trying to shepard me out of the building because I didn't have what they were looking for. I've also gotten interviews comprised of only one question. I've been to interviews where the employers have misread my resume and they would get temper tantrums. You don't get any opportunities for questions, etc. Employers are taking advantage of it, making extremely short interviews and probably just discriminating based on appearance and age. I don't have anything against Hirevue, but it just seems so terrible. I understand that companies can afford to be choosey and that they need to go through hundreds, but come on. Thanks here's your questions =)" and then it shows some typed questions you need to answer. Spent more time testing my audio/video than doing the interview.Īnybody else disturbed with the trend of increasing online screening and premade interviews? Skype interviews and actual long-distance interviews are fine, but what is this premade interview? It's literally just watching a poorly-made prerecorded video of a woman saying, "please check your video and audio and please don't use all the time if you don't need to. Gave an extremely rushed example, and that's the "interview". For some reason though, the timer was set to one minute for this one question only? Kind of shows their priority with safety. They asked me about safety - specifically how I handled a situation with safety. Then there was just one last question, and it REALLY bothered me. It's doable, although the time crunch is pretty limiting but I answered it pretty well with examples from previous work experience. Then maybe just one question actually asking about process control for the job, again three minutes.

Got a three minute question asking what I knew about the company, another one asking why I wanted to work for them. The majority of questions were not even using the webcam and were, once again, questions asking if I was eligible to work in the country, where I lived, availability to start, and even some more intrusive ones that were asking for desired salary, etc - you would select multiple choice.Īlrighty, and I start the next section and finally use my webcam. It looks like less than a dozen questions. Got good lighting source and I had my gaming microphone off to the side (not visible on camera) to talk into for good audio quality.

I got my suit cleaned, got all prepared, bought a nice frame for my degree using my line of credit and made my room (office) look nice for the "interview". I thought it would've been a bit more comprehensive. Hirevue is basically a webcam interview where you record yourself talking to yourself and you answer pre-made questions - you don't actually talk to anybody.
